Orang Bali is a capstone school project created to share stories from individuals around Bali.
Bali is one of the most incredible islands in the world. The natural beauty is endless and the people are among the happiest, kindest, you’ll ever meet. For the past four years, I’ve experienced this myself, living in Bali from the age of 13. Though there is a growing expat community, not many truly integrate themselves locally. I was the perfect example of that. For the first two years of my life in Bali, I didn't have many local interactions, mainly spending time with other expats. At the age of 17, that changed. I started to meet with people outside the international bubble I was in, just starting off with simple conversations and, over time, diving deeper into the story of the Humans of Bali.
I created Orang Bali as a Capstone project, with the intention of documenting and sharing these meaningful interactions with the world, trying to inspire others to do the same. Combining my passions for photography and social interaction, I’d like to share an insight into the lives of the true Orang Bali and spread positive impact while doing so. By sharing these stories and collecting donations of people who feel inspired to do so, I’m able to help people in need and keep doing what I love.
Hey!
My name is Kaleo.
I was born and raised in Dubai, UAE spending my first 13 years in the middle east. I had extremely valuable experiences and formed some lifelong connections. I developed a strong passion for football and spending time in the desert, often filling my weekends with both. Having experienced both for the first time at a very young age, I was introduced to the desert at 5 months old and started playing football at 3 years old. Football played a vastly important role in my physical and mental development, as I grew my sense of determination. I participated in international tournaments in Spain and Cyprus, playing as goalkeeper for my team old, Spanish Soccer Schools.
Living in Bali for the past 5 years, I've been able to surround myself with people from around the world and experience a completely different way of living. I was amazed by the newfound freedom I was offered, living on the island, and loved every second of it.
I've had the opportunity to experience the unique blend of traditional culture and modern amenities that the island has to offer. The rich and vibrant culture has a strong emphasis on art, music, and dance. This gave me the chance to learn about and participate in traditional Balinese dance and music, as well as experience the island's vibrant nightlife and dining scene.
Though everything about the island is incredible, what really drew me to Bali was the school. Made fully out of bamboo, the Green School has a strong emphasis on project-based learning and allowing the students to really take control of their own studies. I moved to Bali in 2018, at the age of 13, and spent a year there before convincing the rest of my family to make the move here. Living here enriched my life and has sculpted me into the person I am today.
